I'm not sure this is really the right mailing list for this.
But in any case, next time it happens type dmesg in a console. If you are
having read errors you should see them in the log.
Also try copying the dvd. Type cat /dev/dvd > /dev/null (replace /dev/dvd
with whatever it's actually called) and watch it for errors.
It's very possible for you to have a lower quality DVD player that can not
read DVDs that are easy for your friend to read.
