I am aware of what it does. This has a great advantage over "static"
packages: on my squeeze/stable systems I'm currently running the
newest adobe flash 11, because the download script fetches the newest
release available (or you can update running as root:
update-flashplugin-nonfree --install --verbose). This is desirable for
both security and performance.
So It would seem to me the Debian multimedia packages are not as
necessary anymore.
