I have exactly the same problem I guess. Tried yesterday h264enc and
it stopped with an error:

Speicherzugriffsfehler
-> MEncoder has exited with a non-zero value!
-> Exiting in function: mencoder_exit()
dmesg shows the following:
mencoder[4480] general protection ip:616711 sp:7fffe6426788 error:0 in
mencoder[400000+a89000]
mencoder[4662] general protection ip:616711 sp:7fff213af2f8 error:0 in
mencoder[400000+a89000]
I'm on Debian testing/AMD64, did a test with an old C2D 8400P laptop
and a new one with Core i5 2410, both have 4G of memory and the same
installation (Fluxbox, Mutt, Google Chrome and some console
applications).
I tried xvidenc too, without any change.
