Nothing worth doing is easy.
Supporting multi-arch definitely isn't easy... but that alone doesn't
necessarily mean it was a bad idea.
Also, the debian/* directory in the vlc source package is definitely one of
the more complicated setups I've seen, even without multi-arch support. The
rules file has custom build flags and many debhelper overrides, and the
control file specifies many binary packages. This is a source package that
