MythTV and mysql vs mariadb

My myth box still runs mysql but mysql is rapidly becoming deprecated in
debian, so I'd like to know:

1. does mythtv work with mariadb?
2. does it work well? any known problems, quirks? or avoidable issues?
3. is there a recommended migration procedure?

any info or pointers to directly relevant web pages would be appreciated.
