Newbie: Moving package to debian proper

Dear list,

I'm trying to package OpenCPN [1] for debian. Here, the wxsvg currently
in deb-multimedia is a dependency which I  would like to move into Debian.

Now, I guess I just could take the source package and submit it with
small administrative changes. However, I really would like to take the
opportunity to share these thoughts on this list. The questions are
obvious: Are there any hidden problems here? What's the best process
handling such issues? And, last but not least, what's your opinion about
this?
