Confirmed, running with `-platform xcb` under wayland (using labwc,
which starts Xwayland by default) works well.

... this doesn't happen with Wayland + `-platform xcb`, VAAPI
acceleration works well.
So seems like it's an X11 only issue, I've switched my default to
Wayland.
