I just noticed there's a thread on this in mythtv-users, with subject
"cutlist editing hangs frontend"

someone posted saying that even a lossless transcode before editing
works around the problem, so i guess that the editor can't handle raw
DVB transport streams.

i edited a transcoded recording and the editor worked fine. so that's
OK, that's a reasonable workaround until it's fixed properly. i
auto-transcode anyway and don't usually get around to editing the
cutlist until after a show has been transcoded.

that's the good news.

the bad news is that the workaround has allowed me to find out that the
current version of the editor has been buggered up. you can't hit enter
to add/delete/move cutlists any more, you have to press M (for menu i
guess) and navigate a multi-level menu.

it might make sense for people who use a remote control, i suppose,
but i use a keyboard (usb keyboard on a desktop machine, wireless usb
keyboard on my main mythfrontend - i have a remote control for it but
i've never bothered setting it up, i prefer the keyboard).

they've also managed to change adding, moving, and deleting cutpoints
from a simple straightforward operation (Enter, up/down arrow, Enter) to
a clumsy multi-keystroke menu navigation, making it much slower and more
tedious to edit the cut list.

worse, when moving a cut it no longer detects the nearest cutlist and
acts appropriately, you have to choose from the menu whether you're
moving the start of the next cut or the end of the previous cut.

adding a cut has to be done as a start & end pair, rather than
individual cut points with a forward or back direction. there doesn't
seem to be any way to 'flip direction' of a cut any more, either.

i suppose i'll get used to the new editor eventually, but WTF were
they thinking? the mythtv devs need a good whacking with the usability
cluestick. every release they manage to turn something that was simple
and no fuss in the previous release into something clumsy and awkward.
they seem far more concerned about their UI theming engine than in
usability and functionality. style over substance.
